re-thinking Valentine
for all you haters out there of Valentine's Day. STOP! yes those of you who call it "single's awareness day".... aren't you aware of your singleness everyday? come on people, this is the one day a year solely devoted to celebrating love! what a great thing! who cares if you have no one to kiss! You should be loving and celebrating all the people close in your life :)
Looking back at the origins of Valentine's Day, it didn't even have to do with romantic love. Saints who shared the name Valentinus were martyrs. St. Valentine's day was focused more on sacrifice rather than romantic love. Isn't sacrifice one of the greatest acts of love? to love completely, you must be completely selfless. Sacrifice is the most selfless thing. A word often used to help describe sacrifice is offering. Offering is a personal word, by that I mean it's something you choose to do. Sacrifice is a conscious, selfless choice. God demonstrated that through Jesus and if we are to learn and follow him, I think this holiday holds great significance, and is a reminder of what it is to truly love.
So instead of thinking about Valentine's day in a lovey dovey manner, think of it as a way to remember those who love you, and also what more you can do, selflessly, to show love to others. Also praising God for the glorious example that he has given to us so clearly!
Have I mentioned how much I love this day?!
